7 Tips For Healthy Skin

Besides having a good skincare routine there are a lot of factors that go into having healthy skin.

Here are 7 Tips on how to  keep your skin looking and feeling great all year long

1. Wear Sunscreen

I've said it before and I'll say it again.  For the love of all that is good wear sunscreen on a daily basis. UV rays break down collagen which gives our skin its elasticity. As we get older, we produce less collagen which means our skin will appear less plump. By applying sunscreen, you can slow down the process to retain that fullness we all associate with youth.  It also protects your skin and significantly lowers your risk of developing skin cancer.  Definitely a no-brainer in my book!

2. Establish a Daily Skincare Routine

By establishing a daily skincare routine it helps you become familiar with your skin which helps to identify your skincare needs.   I admit that when I first started into skincare I went a tad crazy and purchased a ton of products most of which weren't right for me..  My advice is to start by asking yourself these questions. Is your skin dry, oily, combination, do you have uneven skin tone or texture? What is it that you want to achieve?

If your skin is feeling particularly dry try using serums, moisturizers or face masks that contain hyaluronic acid, niacinamides, peptides and antioxidents. If your skin is looking a little dull exfoliate and add a brightening component. Vitamin C is one of my favorites.  And if you have sensitive skin like I do try to avoid products that contain alcohol and fragrance which are known skin irritants.  When it comes to skincare less really is more. By using ingredients that benefit your skin you'll be on your way to a healthier, clearer complexion.  

3. Use quality cotton products

Aside from the products that treat your concerns,  it's equally as important to use quality linens. I always thought cotton pads were cotton pads until I started using the Shiseido Facial Cotton Squares. Not only are they super soft but I can use both sides to remove stubborn eye makeup.  Plus they're the perfect thickness for making your own customized face masks which you can read about here

Another tip is to avoid using your hand/body towel to dry your face. I highly recommend these baby face cloths from Target. I use them with my favorite cleansing balm or oil based cleanser. and my face stays bacteria free after each wash. I purchased 1 pack of 6 so I have one for every day of the week.  

4. Wear sunglasses everyday

I wear sunglasses everyday rain or shine. Exposing your eyes to the radiation from the sun is just as harmful to your eyes as it is to your skin.  Protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses that block out UV rays.  

5. Change your pillow case regularly

Unless you sleep like a mummy and stay completely still while you sleep your face is going to touch your pillowcase at some point during the night. All the natural oils from your scalp and residue from hair products eventually end up on your pillow and wind up all over your face.  YUCK!  It doesn't need to be fancy or even match.  You're freshly washed skin will thank you! 

6. Be Gentle

The skin on your face is very delicate especially around the eye area. Over time tugging and pulling your skin can lead to drooping and sagging which is what we're trying to avoid in the first place.  Don't undo all your hard work.  When using face products always pat or press the products into your face and swipe in an upwards motion.   

7. Diet/Exercise/Sleep

Ever notice that when we're not taking care of our overall health that it winds up all over our faces.  We've all had weeks where we are working long hours, feeling stressed out or overindulged with our favorite salty treats. The last thing we want to think about is going to the gym or spending time prepping a meal when ordering out is so much easier. Being stressed also affects our normal sleeping patterns so we end up feeling more tired than the day before. 

To get yourself back on track start by drinking a glass of water in the morning. This not only kick starts your metabolism but also gets your blood flowing. Keep this going by staying hydrated throughout the day because after all our bodies are made up of 60% water. When skin cells are hydrated we appear more youthful.  Who wouldn't want that?  

Eat plenty of veggies like tomatoes and cucumbers which are, you guessed it mainly made up of water.  Get your ass back in gear by taking quick walks throughout the day.  At the end of the day power down all those electronics, hop into bed with a good book or some relaxing music and get the good night's sleep your body deserves.
